Having a dimensional design and packaging design class along with the working with the gallery committee for alumni show it has given me numerous opportunities to experiment much more with screen printing. As my time and the time of many friends of mine at The Art Institute comes to an end we've all been reaching out to each others exclusive talents.</span></div>
<div style="color: #444444; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', HelveticaNeue, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14.44444465637207px; line-height: 21.111112594604492px;">

My friend, John has been into collecting hats for a while now, specifically quality 5 panel hats, namely from RIPNDIP, The Quiet Life, and Supreme amongst others. It hasn't been until recently, within the past month or so that he began making his own printed pocket tee's in between work and studying animation at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh.</div>
</div>
<div style="color: #444444; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', HelveticaNeue, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14.44444465637207px; line-height: 21.111112594604492px;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
We decided to try to make something more out of his ideas than just a hobby and reached out to our friend and fellow designer, Stephen Catapano who almost immediately started working out ideas for designs and a logo of sorts. If there is one thing to know about Stephen it is his constantly evolving obsession with everything letters and typography, especially script fonts so needless to say, his hand drawn type was as on point as ever.</div>
</div>
<div style="color: #444444; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', HelveticaNeue, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14.44444465637207px; line-height: 21.111112594604492px;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
All of the prepping and printing was done in one night in a friend's dorm room so I was surprised when the screen turned out as well as it did so I think I'm getting the hang of it.</div>
</div>
<div style="color: #444444; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', HelveticaNeue, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14.44444465637207px; line-height: 21.111112594604492px;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I can see this developing into a hobby of mine as I continue to learn and experiment more with the medium. It feels as though everything I've been doing art and design-wise have been exercises, preparing me to do something more ambitious with what I've learned. <span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4;">In terms of what the next step will be, nothing is certain for now but this project will continue to develop in some way.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">In a few previous posts I mentioned I was helping plan and design posters for The Art Institute of Pittsburgh's Alumni Show, a show which looked to shine light on the work of recent alumni. For this show t</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">he school developed a newly formed committee reaching out to students of various majors and some faculty to help organize gallery events and worked hard throughout the quarter to design and produce posters, hand-outs, signage, display pieces and curate the event.</span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> After a few months of planning the gallery committee pulled together a really nice show. For the show we wanted to use the logo designed by Mark Saville for t-shirts. It was proposed that at the show, students, faculty, and other attendees would be able to come up and screen print their own t-shirts.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I’m not by any means a pro at screen printing so the design did come out a bit choppy at the bottom, courtesy of my makeshift set-up. I also initially intended for there to be two designs in which participants would be allowed to choose from but I mistakenly managed to expose the image in reverse, hence properly fucking things up but all-in-all I think it turned out rather nicely, albeit the minor imperfections.</span></div>

The reception of screen printing booth turned out much better than I had anticipated seeing as nearly all 75 of the shirts were used by students for the duration of the show. As the show slowed down, with fewer people coming in we decided to try experimenting with mixing a few of the colors we had together.</div>

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">
The two above images are posters I created for an upcoming gallery show at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh. The show will feature a body of work from recent alumni. I wanted to create a poster with imagery that encompasses the vast array of talents featured within the show from a number of different majors that AIP has to offer, hence the variety of icons that make up much of the poster.</span><br />
<div>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">For the first poster I wanted to have something that stood out. Instead of using the school’s typical colors I chose to go with something a little more diverse, with more contrast, darks, mediums, and light colors. </span><span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">With the second poster (bottom) I went with a more subdued layout and color palette with the icons acting as a background to bring more direct attention to the text. The classy center graphic was created by Mark Saville who also produced a number of posters and imagery to promote the show. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">I still have a few more signage pieces that I will be working on before the shows reception date which I will have posted here in the coming weeks as well as some other projects that are slowly but surely coming together.</span><br />

We had to make a bag for the Fourth of July. <span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; line-height: 20px;">Above are a few select images of some digital and traditional texture studies that I have been experimenting with periodically in my free time. The first two (from the top) are digital vector renderings of circles layered and arranged repetitiously in patterns. The last two are densely layered linear pen & ink and scratchboard drawings.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; line-height: 20px;"><br /></span><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; line-height: 20px;">I've been feeling inspired lately by all things linear and geometric but I think these "drawings" better represent an obsession with the idea that I could make something organic and textural, create a sense of depth, or evoke some kind of emotion with elements that are synthetic such as lines and simple shapes.</span></span><br />

</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Within recent years I've fallen out of illustration, pretty much completely. It's a sad aspect of my life, one that, confessionally, can be attributed to a mixture of built up anxiety and laziness... but mostly laziness. Drawing used to be one of my favorite things to do; throughout my years in high school I spent much of my time drawing, either at home or in class, doodling and sketching out ideas, either in my sketchbook or on my classwork and notes. While that may not seem like the most appropriate use of my time for me it was a healthy hobby, one that I have fallen out of and unhealthily began dwelling on daily but never actually attending to.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Instead, music, or rather that of the avant-garde and experimental persuasion, that of noise has become the focus of much of my time. Along with my friend, Brian Sopher and more recently, Andrew Lake we created music under the name Hintergrund, a project I have documented here in a number of posts which I have created artwork and designed the packaging for.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Realizing my love for music and visual art, namely illustrative, I noticed that the two go perfectly together because what is music without the accompany of a visual element, an aesthetic, something visually tangible? Getting to the point, I approached Heccra, a one-man experimental post-hardcore project in which I have written <a href="http://inb4track.wordpress.com/2012/04/24/heccra-white-eagle/" target="_blank">reviews</a> for and more recently conducted an <a href="http://inb4track.wordpress.com/2013/04/01/qa-interview-with-heccra-beginnings-pizza-is-emo-and-beyond/" target="_blank">interview</a> with over at <a href="http://inb4track.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">inb4track</a>, the music blog I write for. I offered that I draw a design up for t-shirts, the result being the above image.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To put everything into context without too much unimportant inside speak, Heccra's sound is distinctive in that the vocals sometimes feature this pitch-shift which make them sound, like that of a chipmunk. Its a strange but intriguing production choice, one that I feel embodies the sound of the project quite well and as such, I thought I would touch on that in my illustration which is that of a cartoonish chipmunk looking rad in a cali-flip style hat, the name "Heccra" embroidered on the bottom of the bill. I think it turned out pretty dece.</div>

I'm happy to say that the new Hintergrund album, 'Nemesis', our second release is finished and is now available for free to stream and download. I'd like to say a few things regarding details about the albums production and completion.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
What we were able to accomplish with 'Nemesis' encompasses a much more expansive sonic range than our previous effort, Signal Blister. The sounds range from crushing walls of dense distortion and feedback, to screeching oscillation, to airy and colorful ambience. One of the beautiful things about noise and the likes of experimental music is the process, which many times is a wholly improvised matter that always leaves room for the possibility of failure and spontaneity, an aspect that is unfortunately all too often alien to music. In noise this additional element played a large role in how the album was created. We worked with what we had at the time; a broken guitar, an old broken karaoke microphone, prepared saxophone, circuit bent electronics, and whatever else we could find that we felt was worth recording. Much like the sound of 'Nemesis' the instrumentation directly reflects this brokenness. I think it is safe to say that, for me at least that 'Nemesis' is not only to be heard as a piece of music but to be seen as being representative of an exercise in experimentation, our instruments not simply being used as they were intended to be but rather used as an extension of our collective ideas, improvised and elaborated on in that moment.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
From this point on I will be focusing on putting together the artwork for a physical release of the album. You can stream and download 'Nemesis' at the links provided below. Enjoy.</div>

During the summer of last year my good friend Brian Sopher and I got together for a jam session in which we spent time making noises, drones, and generally experimenting. Out of these freeform jam sessions our experimentation evolved into what is now known as the drone / noise duo Hintergrund. We released our first album Signal Blister during the summer of last year. Sometime back in January nearing the end of my winter break away from school Brian and I got together once again to record with no specific goal in mind before departing back to our respective colleges. Early in the first weeks of summer we met up to finish what we had started and to say the least, having given multiple listens, I'm pretty pleased with the results. What we were able to achieve is much more diverse than what can be heard on our first full length, Signal Blister.</div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">

<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Interior Artwork</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The artwork is nearing completion. The two images seen above, that of the interior and exterior spreads are complete. All that is necessary now is the addition of type and the application of color.</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As I have stated in past posts I believe the artwork is a crucial part, perhaps even on an equal level as the music in which it accompanies. Sometimes the artwork can determine whether or not I actually purchase an album whereas I could simply download it for free. Not only is it important in that aspect but also reflectively. I believe the artwork should serve a purpose not separate from the music but rather compliment the music visually in a way that reflects the mood, the concept, and emotions derived from it. With that said the artwork I have begun working on can be looked at as my interpretation of the sounds on this album in a visual form; fragmented, disjointed, chaotic, and broken which needless to say are a few words that essentially summarize the music that Brian and I have created together sonically in a visual sense.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
So its been a minute since I've updated this blog.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Late last year I purchased a Speedball screen printing kit which due to time constraints from school work and a general lack of motivation (mostly the latter) I didn't bother messing around with. With all of the free time I had during the summer away from school I decided to set aside some time to learn about the process of screen printing.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The image I worked with is a photograph of an old factory tower I took that was used as artwork for the album sleeve of the first Hintergrund release, Signal Blister. I used the diazo photo emulsion technique to reproduce the image seeing as that is pretty much the only way of replicating it while retaining as much detail as possible. The process involved much trial and error as I often ended up with either an under exposed image or an over-exposed one but finally I was able to achieve a proper exposure.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I think the final image turned out nicely and have printed around 12 black on white t-shirts for the first run. If demand is high enough I may print more but until now this is it.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In other Hintergrund related news, during the summer Brian and I got together to record material for the next Hintergrund release, all post-production and mastering has been completed and having given multiple listens the results sound great. More details regarding the new album and a release date will be determined as soon as I finish completing the art work, which I will post the progress of here.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Over the summer of 2011 friend and fellow musician Brian Sopher and I released a full length album entitled Signal Blister under the name Hintergrund consisting of improvised compositions created utilizing treated guitar, synth, a cheap broken microphone and plenty of digital processing. The music on the release is comprised of seven somewhat long droning compositions interlaced with traces of melody and rhythm all buried beneath layers of tectonic ever shifting walls of distortion and colorful textures.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Previously, I had written several blog posts including information as well as <a href="http://redntoothnclaw.blogspot.com/2011/09/signal-blister-design-and-layout.html" target="_blank">images</a> and <a href="http://redntoothnclaw.blogspot.com/2011/08/hintergrund-half-halo-antithesis.html" target="_blank">samples</a> from the album. The album artwork is derived from a series of edited photographs of an abandoned factory I shot during the production of the album. One of my favorite aspects of purchasing a piece of music in a physical format, whether it be a CD or vinyl copy has been the artwork that accompanies it, something that gave me a reason to buy it as oppose to simply downloading a digital copy or pirating it. The artwork often times provides a deeper look into the music, sometimes exemplifying a more personal aspect of the music that wouldn't be present otherwise. I feel as though the artwork that accompanies the album does well in visually representing the sounds within the recordings, providing images to stimulate the listener; this idea of layers of paint and concrete having been removed, decayed, weathered, and worn away to reveal an underlying surface, much like the sounds on Signal Blister. The physical copies of the album were finished in October of last year and are handmade, therefore limited to only thirteen unnumbered copies, all of which will be given away to close friends and other desirables. Above is a cropped image of the album artwork and below is the physical release displaying the gatefold style packaging as well as the CD and sleeve. There is a link provided below to a free download of the album in 320 kbps which includes the artwork. Enjoy.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I recently designed a logo / banner for inb4track, a music review blog about independent /mu/sicians that I and a mess of other people write for. I thought it would be nice if the site had a logo of it's own so I created one. Once again going off of the triangulated Andy Gilmore inspired theme, I designed the type around a triangular pattern. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
As for the design, the logo is pretty much self explanatory. The name of the blog plays off of the 'inb4' meme, a popular internet meme used on internet forums that generally refers to a person posting a reply, a thread, or a statement 'before' another user post an obvious and often times critical response. 'Inb4' is followed by a single word (i.e. 'track') or a short phrase that will indefinitely appear in the topic.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The 'b4' was substituted with a set of arrows that doubles as the rewind button on a cassette or CD player. I experimented with multiple color pallets and variations in placement of color beside color with the end result ultimately coming down to the combination you see above. All of the colors are slightly dulled to what I feel is colorful and fun without being gender biased or appealing on a male or female basis. In other words I feel like this is a logo that works in the context of what the blog is about.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
As I mentioned in my last post, I have recently taken an interest in circuit bending and experimenting with sound in general so I thought I would share my first foray into it. The toy used in the video is a cheap toy keyboard that I picked up from a goodwill for about 4 dollars. The video exists to document some interesting sounds that I was able to achieve as I was exploring the toy's circuits. I wired the bends to a potentiometer and two switches which can be seen (and heard) manipulating the sound.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Initially, I wanted to attach an output for use with an amplifier and ultimately repackage the toy into an instrument of it's own but unfortunately, shortly after the video was made the toy died which is somewhat disappointing but oh well. <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/TylerThompsonVideo" target="_blank">Expect more</a>.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Pictured above is a recent project for my intermediate illustration final. We were asked to complete an illustration for either a poster promoting a blues event or a theater poster promoting a production of our choice. I obviously chose the latter as I felt it get me more freedom in terms of what I wanted to illustrate and with that opened up possibilities in materials and techniques I could experiment with.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For those who are unfamiliar with Oedipus Rex, in summary the story is the first in a series of three Greek tragedies by Sophocles that detail the events of Oedipus who is prophesied to kill his father and sexually posses his mother. Throughout much of the play Oedipus does everything in his power to alter his destiny in order to prevent it from occurring but ironically enough all of the actions he takes in hopes of reversing the prophecy ultimately end up bringing him to face his inescapable fate. Upon realizing that his fate has been completed he gouges his eyes out symbolizing his blindness to reality.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I began by researching some theatrical posters, specifically ones having to do with the subject at hand. I felt that most of the posters I found promoting showings of Oedipus Rex were very static and boring. They did a poor job of capturing the climactic tragedy that the story builds up to and I wanted to capture that in my depiction. The image is a photo I took of a friend which I broke down into a simple two part stencil. For this painting I used black india ink and watercolor gouache. To achieve the speckled textural effect almost the entirety of the painting was created using a dog toothbrush which has two ends, one large and one small for bigger blotches of paint and smaller speckles respectively.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I think the illustration does its job capturing much of what the play is about so I'm pretty happy with the way the painting turned out. On a side note I now write for <a href="http://inb4track.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">inb4track</a>, a music review blog dedicated to reviewing /mu/sicians, home recorded projects, and independently made music. Check out a few of my latest reviews of <a href="http://inb4track.wordpress.com/2012/01/13/the-pessimist-hangs-the-optimist-you-see-all-kinds-of-things-when-you-are-the-only-one-awake/" target="_blank">The Pessimist Hangs the Optimist's latest EP</a> and <a href="http://inb4track.wordpress.com/2012/01/12/qwertzuiop-dead-oak/" target="_blank">Qwertzuiop - Dead Oak</a>. Signal Blister is well on it's way to becoming a realized physical product.
With the design and layout of the packaging complete I am currently working on

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Above is
the cover art. The album cover is a wrap around gatefold style CD case. The
right half of the image is the front of the album with the left half being the
back. Since the music relies heavily on textures and soundscapes I saw it
fitting that the artwork should convey the same feeling one might receive while
listening to the album. Prior to this project, I had never taken
photographs for art purposes so I seized this as an opportunity to try it out.
Pictured below is the interior art for the album. Together the images reflect a
cracked and fragmented landscape, something distant, far away from here. Something
that has barely survived a long tormented relationship with a dangerous and
unknown act of celestial wrath.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

I believe many of us like to think of the seasons in relation to the basic emotions holiday cliches make us want to believe in. Fall, being the time off year I am most fond is a season I feel indifferently, apathetically toward. To me it represents a time of passing on. For nearly all of us death is indeed a negative occurrence, however, in this context I tend to not think of it in a negative way at all. For me it evokes the sense of a slow and natural death. It is the last breath for summer but for some of us it will be our first. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">This whole idea of other things passing on and giving life to the still living is something that interests me. It seems ironic how the occurrence of death, a thing many react to so negatively is something that keeps us alive. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">It is not necessarily a positive thing for those left behind but it is welcome, it is natural and if one looks hard enough there is color beneath all of the gray.</span></span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">Featured below are two selections from Signal Blister; a project that Brian Sopher and I have been collaborating on over the course of the past few weeks under the name Hintergrund. Although absent of any preconceived concept there is a distinct mood that runs throughout the album. "Half Halo" is filled with fluttering synth sounds while swells of distorted guitar linger, rising and falling in the background. "Antithesis" comes in the form of a wave of sound that washes over the listener, a</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"> sense of structure begins to surface as the song progresses before fading out in a hollow sounding haze</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">The album has a layered and rather noisy feel, potentially abrasive to some but if one looks past the layers of dense sound melodies can be found hiding underneath.</span></span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">The images pictured above are a series of photographs I took to use for packaging art. I believe the concept of the photographs follow the mood of the music well. Both of the buildings pictured are powerful structures, each shot from a ground perspective to entail that these structures are threateningly towering over them. Stark cracks of worn gray concrete show through stripped white paint. It is almost otherworldly, reminiscent of some distant world. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">The photographs pictured above follow the same loosely applied principle/poor analogy. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">Most of the effect were achieved by dropping the vibrance and bringing the color up slightly in saturation so that it looks as though it is fading away from years of poor weather. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">I'm currently working on putting together a physical CD version of the album including packaging, layout and photography. </span></span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">So, lately I've been swamped with school projects this quarter which hasn't given me a lot of time to work on anything I actually want to work on. With that being said, instead of posting anything new pertaining to this project I have decided this post will be dedicated to revisiting a self portrait project that I worked on during my senior year of high school for my portfolio class.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Instead of simply posting pictures with a description for each I decided to do something a bit different. I've noticed a few artists who have posted images or made downloadable PDF's of their portfolios for clients or admirers to view. These are really great because it gives other creative people a chance to learn about the creative process they went through in order to achieve the end result. Inspired by this I decided to make a portfolio of my own with steps describing the process I went through so that anyone else willing to experiment would be able to do something similar by applying the technique I used to their own art. </span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">After years of procrastination and various other distractions I've finally decided to sit down and start writing a graphic novel. This blog will document the progression of the project, including writing, sketches, illustrations, etc.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">This first image is a portrait of one of the characters in which the story will revolve around. A color version of the illustration along with a type layout is in the works as well as a possible poster depicting the same image. I am very open to criticism so please, feel free to comment regarding anything that could be hindering the enjoyment of my work.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Not a whole lot to say so far. I will update when I can but posts may be rather spontaneous due to school work and other priorities.</span></div>
